Description

The Cygnus Wall, also known as the Swan Wall or the Gulf of Mexico, is a region of ionized gas that is part of the larger region cataloged as NGC7000 or the North America Nebula.NGC7000 is an emission nebula of the Cygnus constellation, whose shape resembles the continent of North America.
1960 light years away, it was discovered by William Herschel and can only be observed with long exposure photos or with telescopes with a generous aperture but at low magnification (under dark skies).
The North America Nebula and the nearby Pelican Nebula are part of the same giant interstellar cloud that spans most of the constellation. In the photo there is also the dark nebula LDN 935 that separates North America from the pelican.
This image was obtained by integrating and processing according to the Hubble Palette technique. In fact, in the photo the hydrogen, sulfur and oxygen gases are clearly visible and contrasted, which would not be so well discriminated with other techniques.
Image obtained by me and Michele Russo.
